The main type of mechs. are bipedal (two legged) they are either forward jointed (think human legs) or reverse jointed (think dog/wolf) most bipedal mechs. have two arms.

the next most common type of mech. is the quadruped mech. these mechs. are either comparability light and used for scouting, or are heavy duty mechs. supporting either massive weapons or heavy field machinery.

the next type of mech. is the sextant mech. it is very difficult to maneuver as it requires a pilot for each leg but it makes up for it by its ability to support heavy field artillery. it can also serve as a mobile base and a launching pad for several smaller mechs.

while we are mentioning artillery i will mention the tripod mechs. which are used almost exclusively as light artillery their official type designation is mortar.

there are also the crawler mechs. which are basically overpowered tanks

this is to note that mechs. do not have to be huge overpowered hunks of machinery they can be graceful metallic masterpieces, the can also be of any size from as large as a mountain to the size of a tiny insect .

Yes mechs. are considered futuristic, the most common/useful type is the bipedal mech.
