Dear All,
The following are our in-class 'Rules,' (guidelines for Conduct, etc.):
1. No one may interrupt anyone, especially not the teacher. However, the exception to this rule is if the teacher, using her best judgment deems it necessary, for the sake of the peace or the progression of time, to stop a discussion, argument, or dispute. In that case, all will be expected to submit to her judgment, WITHOUT great protest and further loss of time.
2. Whenever any of the students have anything to observe, comment, or ask, they must raise their hand. If they believe that in any given situation there has been an omission on the part of the teacher or a presenters, for the sake of time they should wait until the end of the dissertation to make that observation.
3. All comments should remain as concise and uncontroversial as possible, this is not the time to push each other's buttons, and to see whether each of us can 'take it.'
4. Votes shall in most cases be taken anonymously by the teacher, and the results will not be imputed to specific persons.
5. Unless otherwise noted, the students should remain seated for the entire duration of the class, to minimize distraction and personal inattention.
6. All reports will be given at the outset of each class, discussion led by the teacher will take place in the main class time, and any closing or amending remarks will, of course, be left until the end of class.
A Note:
Remember that during discussions and class time it is truly a Class, and you are expected to behave accordingly. I am still your friend, but not at the moment. When I am working with you as your teacher, I must have your respect as your teacher, not just as your dear friend who happens to be talking about the fundamental rights of all men.
Please read over this a few times over the next few days so that you are familliar with it by Friday (10 February).
I am, and remain,
Sincerely yours,
The Professor, GM
